1996-10-23 14-year-old girl drives car through stop sign / wreck kills tot, truck driver
A 14-year-old girl drove a car through a stop sign and slammed into a United Parcel Service truck on Jacksonville's Westside yesterday, killing a baby in the car and the truck driver, police said.
The underage driver, Shirley Adams, of Sharon Lake Dr. was hospitalized in critical condition last night at University Medical Center. Her 18-year-old passenger, Diane Egantoff, of the 7700 block of Sonia Dr., and Egantoff's 2-year-old daughter, Christine, were listed in fair condition last night. Egantoff's 1-year-old daughter, Tiffany, died in the wreck that also killed the 33-year-old driver of the UPS truck. His name was not realeased pending notification of relatives.
Police said the underage driver had been reported missing from her home. Investigators said she went to her sister's high school yesterday to borrow her keys to get in their home and took her sister's car with one of them.
The accident occurred about 2:10 p.m. at Cobalt Ave. N. and Barmer Dr. in Cedar Hills. Witnesses said the passenger told them they were on their way to a supermarket. Witnesses said the dead baby, who suffered a severe headd injury, had been strapped in a child seat. The other child was using a lap belt. Both women had seat belts on, but the truck driver didn't, police said. Witnesses and police said the truck stopped at the house near the intersection to deliver a package, but left after a man there couldn't pay the $187.00. The teen was in a blue Pontiac Sunbird west on Cobalt when she ran a stop sign and hit the northbound truck, said Lt. R.D. Eason of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. The truck flipped on it's side, the car hit a curb. The truck driver was thrown from his truck and pinned underneath.
Neighbors who heard the crash ran to the scene. Richard Finley, 25, who lives about five houses away, said the passenger asked to help her and her 2-year-old daughter out. Finley's wife Sandra, helped too. "There was nothing I could do for the infant," said Richard Finley, 25. Theresa Wyatt, 45, heard the crash and went to the scene. "It's pretty horrible," she said tearfully. "I thought, 'Oh, dear God, please help them." "I've never seen a baby like that."
